Discussion topic: To Save or to Invest? Long-Term Strategies During Times of Recession
Major economic crises such as the Great Recession are disruptive for firms across industries, markets, and geographies. In fact, crises of this magnitude trigger discussions about fundamental issues of strategy. To what extent did U.S. companies save their way out of the crisis and to what extent did they invest their way out? How did they adapt their strategic investments in an attempt to maintain competitiveness? Which firms emerged more profitable after the crisis and why?

In his talk Yiannis will share some findings from recent research with Caroline Flammer (Ivey School of Business) in which the authors explore these key questions by focusing on companies’ critical strategic decisions during the 2007-2009 crisis with respect to employment, capital expenditures, innovation and stakeholder relations investments.
